Job summary

Anthropic is seeking a Research Engineer to join our Pre-training team, driving the next generation of large language models with a focus on safety and steerability. You will fuse research ideas with engineering, design experiments, and help build scalable training pipelines.

You will lead small projects, collaborate across disciplines, and contribute to the full stack from model design to deployment. This remote role requires collaboration and a strong commitment to societal impact.

Qualifications

• MS or PhD in Computer Science, ML, or a related field.
• Strong software engineering with building complex systems.
• Expertise in Python and deep learning frameworks (PyTorch preferred).
• Familiarity with large-scale ML, language models, and transformers.
• Ability to balance research goals with engineering constraints.
• Strong problem-solving and collaborative, results-oriented mindset.
• Excellent communication and teamwork, with societal impact awareness.

Responsibilities

• Research and implement solutions in model architecture, algorithms, data processing, and optimizer development.
• Independently lead small research projects while collaborating with team members on larger initiatives.
• Design, run, and analyze experiments to advance understanding of large language models.
• Optimize and scale training infrastructure to improve efficiency and reliability.
• Develop and improve dev tooling to enhance team productivity.
• Contribute to the entire stack, from low-level optimizations to high-level model design.
