Job summary

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) invites undergraduates and graduates for a 3-12 month internship in Power System/Power Electronics Modeling, hosted remotely with onsite considerations in Golden, CO. The role focuses on dynamic modeling of inverter-based resources and validation of power system performance.

The internship requires knowledge of stability analysis and control theory, and experience with PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, and related EMT tools.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA required.
  • Undergraduate full-time student in a bachelor’s program.
  • Recent bachelor’s degree within 12 months eligible for internship up to one year.
  • Graduate student in a master’s program or recent master’s degree within 12 months eligible for internship up to one year.
  • Graduate + PhD: enrolled as PhD student after master’s completion.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical analysis related to power electronics and power systems.
  • Build power system EMT simulations and perform validation.
  • Integrate, test, and use user-written models in PSCAD for wind, PV, BESS and other systems.
  • Evaluate studies on inverter-based resources impact on grids.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and reports.
