Job summary

Common Cause is seeking a Policy Director & Counsel to lead policy and legal strategies for the Media & Technology pillar. You will oversee research, briefs, and regulatory work while engaging with policymakers, partners, and the public.

The role emphasizes strategic thinking, coalition building, and advocacy across multiple jurisdictions. You will collaborate with staff nationwide, manage teams, and help shape campaigns and funding strategies.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and admission in good standing.
• Demonstrated subject-matter expertise in media and technology policy.
• Experience managing staff, interns, or fellows.
• Experience taking policy ideas from concept to execution, including drafting proposals and advocacy.
• Knowledge of national political dynamics and relationships with key stakeholders.
• Experience leading coalitions representing diverse interests.
• Track record of organization-wide change initiatives.
• Experience leading state or national public advocacy campaigns in media/tech.
• Familiarity with the federal legislative process, policy research, advocacy and lobbying.

Responsibilities

• Lead policy and legal strategies within the Media & Technology pillar across state, multi-state, and federal levels.
• Supervise senior policy managers; set goals and provide coaching.
• Conduct legal review of bills, testimony, and model legislation for accuracy and priorities.
• Lead watchdog and regulatory work; draft FCC/FTC comments and coordinate with Attorneys General.
• Perform legal and policy research to identify reform opportunities.
• Develop briefs, reports, and materials communicating findings and positions.
• Monitor policy developments and regulatory changes affecting our issues.
• Build external relationships and represent Common Cause in coalitions and events.
• Collaborate with teams to secure funding and support donor engagement where needed.
• Support litigation strategy with analysis and briefs; contribute expertise.
