Job summary

Common Cause seeks a Policy Director & Counsel to lead legal and policy research across state, federal, and technology portfolios. You will shape research, draft positions, and brief policymakers, partners, and the public, translating complex issues into strategic campaigns.

The role is full‑time and remote‑eligible across the lower 48 states, with DC office optional two days a week. You will supervise staff, manage coalitions, and collaborate with External Affairs, Campaigns, and States to

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
• Demonstrated subject‑matter expertise in issues related to media and technology policy
• Experience leading staff and policy campaigns
• Experience with the federal legislative process and policy advocacy
• Ability to travel up to 6 times per year and work from a DC office at least two days per week
• Per our nonpartisan policy, Common Cause staff members may not currently be in elected office or affiliated with a political party

Responsibilities

• Lead development of proactive state, multi-state, and federal policy and legal strategies.
• Supervise the Senior Policy Manager(s) and support their professional development.
• Conduct legal review of bills, testimony, and model legislation to ensure accuracy and alignment with organizational priorities.
• Lead watchdog and regulatory work, including drafting FCC and FTC comments and amicus briefs.
• Represent Common Cause as a spokesperson for policy matters to policymakers, media, and partners.
• Collaborate with state staff and other teams to track and monitor key policy and legal developments across states
