Job summary

PLOS is seeking a Peer Review Operations Specialist (2 Year FTC) for a fully remote, home-based role. The position is union-represented under the Pacific Media Workers Guild, Local 39521 of the NewsGuild-CWA, and accepts applicants from specified US states.

You will manage peer review workflows, uphold publication standards, and collaborate with authors, editors, and vendors. Reporting to the Peer Review Operations Manager, you’ll drive timely submissions, data-driven improvements, and quality

Qualifications

• Prior experience in peer-reviewed scholarly publishing.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and oral.
• Growth mindset with a collaborative, team player mentality.
• Ability to maintain a positive and professional customer service attitude.
• Able to work with international colleagues and vendors.

Responsibilities

• Ensure timely, efficient peer review of all submissions.
• Resolve vendor queries within required timelines or escalate appropriately.
• Identify and remove barriers to submission and improve workflows.
• Troubleshoot manuscript/workflow issues and propose improvements.
• Maintain standard journal workflows and adopt approved process updates.
• Liaise with vendors daily and monitor quality against KPIs.
• Contribute to operational research outputs to optimize workflows.
