Job summary

Shelterforce is seeking a part-time, remote copyeditor and fact-checker to join our editorial team. The role involves reviewing articles (1,000–3,000 words), ensuring AP-style consistency, and performing basic fact-checks.

The position is 22–25 hours weekly with a regular schedule during business hours. Responsibilities include uploading content, finding images with alt text, assisting with transcripts and headline ideas, and helping maintain our online archive.

Qualifications

• Exceptional editing and writing skills with strong English grammar.
• Proven experience in news editing and fact-checking.
• Familiarity with AP Style and in-house style guides; attention to readability.

Responsibilities

• Edit content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and consistency.
• Perform basic fact-checking for articles.
• Upload and schedule articles, optimize posts, and manage images and alt text.
• Contribute to headline brainstorms and transcript cleanup.
• Assist in maintaining the online content archive and participate in staff meetings.
