Job summary

ClickHouse Labs is seeking a Research Scientist to tackle high-impact database and systems problems. You will investigate performance bottlenecks in production-quality systems, design new algorithms, and build prototypes integrated into ClickHouse and PostgreSQL open-source projects.

You will publish results, contribute to open-source projects, and collaborate with engineers to deliver robust, scalable solutions across distributed deployments.

Qualifications

• Masters/Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field with research experience.
• Strong publication record in leading venues such as SIGMOD, VLDB, SOSP, OSDI, NSDI, or NeurIPS.
• Experience with database internals or large systems codebases.

Responsibilities

• Conduct applied research to advance performance, scalability, reliability, and functionality of open-source DBMSs.
• Design and evaluate new algorithms, data structures, and system architectures for query optimization, indexing, and distributed data management.
• Develop research prototypes and production-grade implementations with engineering teams.
• Collaborate with engineers to translate research results into practical system improvements.
• Analyze large-scale workloads and benchmarks to identify bottlenecks and optimization opportunities.
• Design experiments and benchmarks to evaluate techniques across realistic workloads and hardware.
• Communicate results through reports, open-source contributions, and presentations at venues like SIGMOD/VLDB/CIDR.
• Identify emerging research opportunities to shape long-term direction at ClickHouse Labs.
