Job summary

The Legislative Research Council, the nonpartisan research staff to the South Dakota Legislature, seeks a Legislative Research Analyst. The role supports legislators with accurate research, bill drafting, and policy analysis.

The position may allow remote work with requirement to be onsite in Pierre during the legislative session and periodically thereafter. A bachelor's degree and strong analytical skills are essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

• Minimum bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field.
• Strong research and analytical skills.
• Willingness to expand expertise across subjects.
• Ability to communicate clearly to legislators and the public.
• Must remain objective and nonpartisan and handle confidential information.
• Capable of working under deadlines and long hours during the legislative session.

Responsibilities

• Draft and edit bills, resolutions, and amendments to implement legislators' ideas.
• Staff standing committees, develop agendas, obtain testimony, and prepare committee reports.
• Compile data and conduct general and legal research for committees and legislators; present alternatives.
• Staff interim committees, assist with meeting arrangements, prepare background materials and reports.
• Review administrative rules for form, style, clarity and statutory authority.
• Research and write issue memoranda and resources for the Legislature and public.
