Job summary

Symetra seeks an Underwriting Consultant in its Life Underwriting Department to evaluate complex mortality risks, balance underwriting principles with market needs, and support timely decisions. You will interact with senior underwriters, agents, and leadership to drive risk assessment and policy quality.

We value 7–10 years of underwriting experience, strong analytical skills, and a client-focused approach.

Qualifications

• 7–10 years of relevant underwriting experience.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
• Strong technical and financial underwriting skills.
• Service-oriented with ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
• Mastery of underwriting principles, practices, life insurance law and related fields.
• Strong negotiation skills.

Responsibilities

• Determine whether to accept, reject or modify life insurance risks by evaluating medical history, financial background, insurable interest and financial need.
• Consult with other underwriters and medical directors on complex cases; obtain second signature for cases exceeding authority.
• Meet established time service standards.
• Serve as a role model and go-to person for underwriting issues; handle high-visibility cases.
• Communicate underwriting decisions effectively to agents/producers.
• Identify resources and projects to improve underwriting staff and business understanding.
• Represent underwriting in inter-departmental meetings and at external functions.
