Job summary

UChicago Medicine in Illinois is seeking a Registration & Insurance Specialist in the Finance Department. This remote, work-from-home role involves reviewing patient insurance, verifying coverage, and supporting pre- and post-billing activities to identify self-pay balances.

You will collaborate with physicians and clinical staff, handle GAP exceptions and OON reviews, and monitor queues to ensure timely follow-up and accurate FYI notes.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of related insurance experience and 2 years of patient account experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent written and oral skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Insurance knowledge (basic): understanding health insurance types (HMO, PPO, Medicaid, Medicare).
• Familiarity with EHR/EMR systems (Epic, Cerner, or similar).
• Data entry: accurate input of patient and insurance information.
• HIPAA awareness and privacy regulations.

Responsibilities

• Notating Epic FYI as directed within standard work with clear, concise notes.
• Perform complex registration and insurance reviews for out-of-network exceptions within department protocols.
• Follow up with payers on GAP exceptions to inform the clinical team.
• Coordinate with revenue cycle for timely follow up on out-of-network patients and educate patients on plans and out-of-pocket estimates.
• Review 90/10 global period patients for FYI note accuracy.
• Handle IBCCP referrals according to tip sheets and complete invoicing paperwork.
• Monitor work queues and email for timely resolution.
