The role you’ll contribute:

The Inpatient Coder reviews, analyzes, and interprets clinical documentation, applying ICD-10-CM/PCS coding conventions and MS-DRG Medicare Prospective Payment System requirements. The role involves maintaining excellent customer service and respectful relationships.

The value you’ll bring to the team:

• Reviews, analyzes, and interprets clinical documentation, applying ICD-10 codes according to official guidelines, policies, and payer requirements. Considers DRG options to optimize coding in compliance with UHDDS rules and policies.
• Verifies CAC codes and ensures diagnostic and procedure codes are supported by clinical documentation.
• Communicates effectively with physicians and health personnel to ensure accurate, comprehensive documentation.
• Queries physicians for clarification or additional information as needed for optimal coding and reimbursement.
• Applies ICD-10-CM/PCS codes, MS-DRG codes, Present on Admission codes, and patient status codes, understanding their impact on outcomes, quality, reimbursement, and key indicators.

Qualifications

The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed :

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• High school diploma and two years of coding education (medical coding certificate or 2-year HIM program), including coursework in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, and pathophysiology.
• Three or more (3+) years of inpatient hospital coding experience, including specialized coding skills in areas such as cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, trauma, neonatology, pediatrics, plastic surgery, bariatric surgery, cardiology, and other services in a tertiary care setting.
