The role you’ll contribute:

The Inpatient Coder reviews, analyzes, and interprets clinical documentation in the medical record, applying appropriate ICD-10-CM/PCS coding conventions and MS-DRG Medicare Prospective Payment System requirements. The Senior Coder demonstrates experience and expertise, so coding quality review is not required before billing. The Senior Coder also mentors others and assists management in maintaining coding excellence.

The value you’ll bring to the team:

  • Verifies CAC codes and that assignment of diagnostic and procedure codes is based on and supported by the physician’s clinical documentation.
  • Effectively communicates with physicians and clinical personnel the need for comprehensive, accurate, and timely documentation.
  • Queries physicians for clarification of discrepancies, additional diagnoses, complications, or co-morbid conditions.
  • Applies ICD-10-CM/PCS codes, MS-DRG codes, Present on Admission codes, and patient status codes, understanding their impact on mortality rates, quality, reimbursement, and key indicators.
  • Utilizes knowledge of Official Coding Guidelines, Coding Clinic guidance, medical necessity, and coverage determinations.

Qualifications

The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma and two years of coding education, including medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, and pathophysiology.
  • Five or more (5+) years of inpatient hospital coding experience, including specialized coding skills in areas such as cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, trauma, neonatology, pediatrics, plastic surgery, bariatric surgery, cardiology, etc.
