Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED required.
• Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management - Preferred
• Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management - Preferred
• 2 years Coding - Required
• Surgery Coding experience - Preferred
• CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) - Required
• RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) - Required within 180 days
• RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) - Required within 180 days

Responsibilities

• Reviews electronic medical record documentation and applies ICD and CPT codes per Official Coding Guidelines, focusing on hospital surgery, observation and monthly series services.
• Abstracts key data elements for billing and data analysis.
• Evaluates coding accuracy and productivity; ensures compliance with coding guidelines and payer rules.
• Identifies missing or unclear documentation and takes steps to obtain it.
• Maintains knowledge of professional coding guidelines, medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, and payer guidelines.
