Job summary

Illinois Legal Aid Online (ILAO) seeks a Legal Content Director to lead the Content Team in developing accessible, accurate, and actionable legal information for users across Illinois. You will set content strategy, supervise five staff, and ensure quality through governance, analytics, and user research.

The role collaborates with Product and Community Engagement teams, external partners, and leadership to align content with organizational goals.

Qualifications

• Active Illinois law license, or ability to become an active Illinois attorney.
• Minimum of 7 years’ experience publishing digital content, knowledge management, or legal content technology.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience supervising others, including staff, volunteers, and contractors.
• Experience working in or with legal aid, access to justice, or public interest legal services.
• Expertise in distilling complicated concepts into understandable, actionable resources.
• Experience developing and executing content workflows and using content management systems.
• Experience using Google Analytics or similar tools to evaluate content performance.
• Knowledge of or ability to grow expertise in search engine optimization (SEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO).
• Demonstrated experience leading complex cross-functional work involving people outside the candidate’s direct supervisory authority.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement content strategy aligned with organizational goals.
• Supervise and develop Content Team staff and manage volunteers/contractors.
• Ensure legal content meets quality, readability, accessibility, and consistency standards.
• Oversee monitoring of legal and policy changes affecting content.
• Maintain content style guide and knowledge-management standards.
• Own content performance metrics and drive improvements.
• Collaborate with Product Team on user research and usability testing.
