Job summary

Illinois Legal Aid Online is seeking a Legal Content Director to lead the Content Team, shaping the strategy, standards, and governance of legal information. The role collaborates with Product, Community Engagement, and leadership to ensure accessible, accurate, and usable resources across services.

The director will supervise five staff, coordinate with partners, and ensure content quality, accessibility, and usefulness.

Qualifications

• Active Illinois law license or ability to become an active Illinois attorney.
• 7+ years publishing digital content, knowledge management, or legal content technology.
• 5+ years supervising staff, volunteers, and contractors.
• Experience in legal aid, access to justice, or public interest legal services.
• Ability to distill complex concepts into actionable resources.
• Experience developing content workflows and using CMS.
• Experience using Google Analytics or similar tools to evaluate content performance.
• Knowledge of SEO and GEO and ability to grow expertise.
• Experience leading cross-functional work with non-direct reports.
• Experience implementing content governance or knowledge governance practices.
• Experience collaborating with technical and nontechnical colleagues on product teams.
• Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office suite.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement ILAO’s legal content strategy aligned with mission and user needs.
• Oversee content standards, workflows, and decision-making processes.
• Lead monitoring of legal developments affecting content and users.
• Own content performance metrics and drive improvements.
• Apply SEO, GEO, and content-discovery practices.
• Collaborate with Product and Community Engagement teams on usability testing.
• Set team goals, plan resources, and manage budgets and staffing.
