Job summary

Civilization Research Institute (CRI) is seeking a Full Stack Developer to build and maintain software that supports our research team. You will work across the full technology stack, delivering data-driven tools for organizing information, evaluating evidence, and enabling collaborative sensemaking.

The role is remote with occasional travel to Asheville, NC, reporting to the CTO. You will own projects from concept to production, emphasizing reliability, security, and thoughtful engineering

Qualifications

• Experience building production web applications.
• Experience with modern front-end frameworks (React/Next.js/Vue).
• Experience designing back-end services and APIs (FastAPI/Django/Flask/Node.js).
• Strong SQL, data modeling, and relational databases (preferred in GCP).
• Experience with containerization and deployment workflows.
• Cloud architecture, security, monitoring, and reliability knowledge.
• Version control, automated tests, CI/CD practices.
• Ability to work independently and own projects end-to-end.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain full-stack applications.
• Develop intuitive front-end interfaces for research and knowledge management.
• Build back-end services, APIs, databases, and data pipelines.
• Manage cloud infrastructure, deployment workflows, and monitoring.
• Collaborate with researchers to translate needs into tech solutions.
• Prototype new tools and evaluate usefulness with users.
• Improve architecture, performance, and scalability of systems.
• Integrate third-party services and AI/ML capabilities where appropriate.
• Establish engineering practices including testing, docs, and CI/CD.
• Communicate trade-offs and risks clearly to technical and non-technical colleagues.
