Job summary

January Family Law, LLC in Chicago, IL seeks an experienced Family Law Attorney for a remote-first role handling divorce, parenting time, and related matters.

You will draft agreements, advise on prenups, manage property divisions, and represent clients at hearings, with mentorship and collaboration from paralegals and staff.

Illinois bar in good standing and at least 2 years of family law experience are required; Cook County and collar county experience is a plus.

Qualifications

• A J.D. from an accredited law school.
• An active Illinois license in good standing, or eligibility for admission in Illinois.
• At least 2 years of family law experience at a law firm, including contested matters and court appearances.
• A record of advocating for both petitioners and respondents.
• Strong communication and negotiation skills, and the ability to stay calm when emotions run high.
• Willingness to appear in person at hearings and trials as needed.
• A plus: experience in Cook County and collar county domestic relations courts.

Responsibilities

• Represent clients in divorce, parenting time and allocation of parental responsibilities, child support, maintenance, and parentage matters.
• Draft and advise on prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.
• Handle property division, including real estate and retirement assets.
• Draft pleadings, motions, settlement agreements, parenting plans, judgments and orders.
• Negotiate settlements and represent clients at hearings, mediations, and trial.
• Keep clients informed with proactive updates and meet every court and filing deadline.
• Handle sensitive matters, including domestic violence and child-related concerns, calmly and professionally.
• Keep case notes, tasks, and deadlines current in our case management system, Smokeball.
