Job summary

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation is seeking an Associate Director of AI Foundations Engineering to lead the strategy, design, and deployment of an agentic AI platform. The role partners with product, data, architecture, security, and business teams to translate AI capabilities into impactful business solutions.

The position is remote for candidates in the United States, with travel and eligibility considerations defined by the Hiring Manager. Up to three roles are available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 1–2 years with large language models and at least one agentic system deployed beyond a demo.
• Hands-on experience building AI agents on AWS (Bedrock, Agents, Knowledge Bases, Guardrails).
• Proficiency with at least one agent framework (e.g., Strands Agents, LangGraph, LlamaIndex).
• Strong Python skills and AWS services in agent architectures (Lambda, Step Functions, ECS/EKS, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, IAM).
• Experience with retrieval-augmented generation and vector stores; ability to design tool use and function calling.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture, design, and delivery of the agentic AI platform and related solutions.
• Transform existing products and workflows into scalable agentic AI capabilities.
• Oversee end-to-end AI engineering operations: development, deployment, monitoring, reliability, and improvement.
• Define technical roadmaps, platform standards, and solution priorities with stakeholders.
• Establish engineering best practices for performance, security, governance, and maintainability.
• Evaluate, integrate, and optimize AI models and orchestration components.
• Build and mentor high-performing engineering teams and foster innovation and accountability.
• Identify opportunities for reusable AI services and operational efficiency.
