Job summary

Restate is seeking a Design Engineer to own the core Restate UI, design and code. The UI is the live window onto a distributed system that runs at scale, with large, changing data and users who are in a hurry.

You’ll work with world-class engineers to build a scalable design system, ensure low latency, and create data-rich interfaces that clearly communicate state. This role blends design leadership with production-grade front-end coding.

Qualifications

• Production front-end skills with React, TypeScript, and modern HTML/CSS.
• A portfolio of shipped work showing craft and code behind it.
• Strong design sensibility with a high visual bar across the product.
• Information design: turning data into readable, efficient layouts.
• Data-intensive interfaces with pagination, filtering, and charts on real data.
• Front-end performance: profiling, slow rendering fixes, and reduced bundle size.
• Motion design built in code to communicate state and time.
• Design systems in code with reusable components and patterns.
• Ability to read API specs and backend code to understand data flows.
• AI literacy to leverage AI in design workflows.

Responsibilities

• Architect, design and ship the core Restate UI from concept to production-ready code.
• Show system behavior: timelines, retries, queues, state, and failures for quick debugging.
• Build for data at scale with large result sets, live updates, filtering and search.
• Design resilient states: loading, empty, partial, error, and multi-result scenarios.
• Keep it fast: low latency and optimized rendering are design decisions.
• Maintain a single mental model across UI, SDKs, and docs.
• Collaborate with engineers to keep shipping at a high design bar.
• Develop scalable design systems in code for architecture, code, and interactive elements.
