Job description

About the Role

Our client, a forward-thinking leader in the mining technology space, is actively seeking a talented and experienced Data Scientist to join their innovative team on a fully remote basis. This role focuses on developing and deploying sophisticated predictive models to optimize various aspects of mining operations, from resource exploration and extraction efficiency to safety and equipment maintenance. Leveraging vast datasets generated from operational sites worldwide, you will uncover insights and build solutions that drive significant improvements in productivity and cost reduction. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in statistical modeling, machine learning, and data mining techniques, coupled with a passion for applying these skills to the unique challenges of the mining industry. You will work autonomously, collaborating with geologists, engineers, and operational managers across different time zones, making this a truly global and impactful position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and implement machine learning models for predictive maintenance, operational forecasting, and resource estimation.
  • Analyze large and complex datasets from diverse mining operations to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights.
  • Clean, process, and transform raw data into formats suitable for advanced analytics and modeling.
  • Build and maintain data pipelines for efficient data ingestion and model deployment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineers, geologists, operations) to define problem statements and deliver data-driven solutions.
  • Communicate complex analytical findings and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence relevant to the mining sector.
  • Develop dashboards and reports to visualize key performance indicators and model outputs.
  • Contribute to the development of a data-centric culture within the organization.
  • Ensure the ethical and responsible use of data in all analytical endeavors.
Requirements
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a Data Scientist, with a proven track record of building and deploying predictive models.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R and associated data science libraries (e.g., Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Pandas).
  • Strong experience with SQL and database management.
  • Expertise in statistical modeling, machine learning algorithms (regression, classification, clustering, deep learning), and data mining techniques.
  • Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and their ML services is advantageous.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a remote setting.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Understanding of the mining industry's operational processes is highly desirable.
