Newsela, a leading education technology company, is seeking a Data Engineer to build and maintain integrations, automate data workflows, and ensure data accuracy across educational platforms. You’ll support school operations and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver scalable data solutions.

The role emphasizes working with K-12 data, APIs, and data warehousing concepts, with a fully remote setup and a compensation package including stock options and benefits.

Qualifications

• 4+ years in software engineering, data engineering, or SIS specialist role.
• Hands-on experience with Student Information Systems or K-12 platforms, including APIs and data exports/imports.
• Strong SQL, Python, and ETL/ELT tool skills.
• Experience with RESTful APIs, SFTP, and other data exchange methods.
• Experience with educational data and data warehousing concepts.
• Data quality assurance practices and tooling, including dataset validation and reconciliation.
• Detail-oriented and able to translate customer data requirements into technical specs and QA checks.
• Ability to work independently in a fully remote position.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain integrations and ETL processes between K-12 data and systems.
• Design, implement, and optimize data pipelines.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver robust, scalable data solutions.
• Maintain technical documentation for data models and processes.
• Monitor data flow and respond to API changes.
• Contribute to cross-functional projects on school operations and data.
• Perform QA on downstream data to ensure accuracy and alignment with customer requirements.
