Job summary

ABB Inc. seeks a Data Center Sr. PLC Technician to provide independent technical leadership for pre-startup, startup, commissioning, and maintenance of paralleling switchgear and controls in mission-critical power applications.

You will guide junior field resources, interface with customers, contractors, and design engineering, and travel nationwide across the US. The role demands hands-on startup/commissioning experience, strong PLC/relay knowledge, and a proven ability to lead on-site

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 7+ years of field experience or an associate/bachelor degree with 5+ years in related field.
• Demonstrated independent field capability on highly complex assignments.
• Advanced experience with low- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, generator controls, PLC-based controls, HMIs/ACS, industrial networking, and mission-critical power systems.
• Hands-on startup and commissioning leadership, energization and switching, troubleshooting under schedule pressure, and directing multi-person site teams.
• Ability to read, interpret, and redline complex electrical and control drawings and apply engineering methods in the field.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, customer communication, technical reporting, and field leadership skills.
• Ability to travel extensively within the United States and stay at customer sites for extended assignments.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and execute complex field assignments involving Paralleling Switchgear and PLC/Relay transfer schemes.
• Lead testing of emergency/standby power systems, including transfers, load add/shed, paralleling.
• Configure, verify, and troubleshoot generator controls, protective relays, switchgear, PLCs, and SCADA communications.
• Perform advanced troubleshooting and authorized modifications of PLC ladder logic and ACS parameters.
• Establish and troubleshoot Modbus, PLC-to-PLC, remote PLC, and BMS/EPMS/SCADA communications.
• Interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, and sequencing documents.
• Lead on-site technical execution, coordinate daily work, and manage punch-list closure.
• Mentor junior field engineers and technicians, provide coaching on safe execution and customer communication.
• Act as senior escalation resource for high-level troubleshooting and emergency response.
• Complete field service reports, startup checklists, redlines, and customer status updates.
• Protect assets, control costs, and identify opportunities to improve quality and service delivery.
• Build customer relationships by translating technical findings into actions, risks, and recovery plans.
