Job summary

NPR is seeking a 2L or 3L law student for a for-credit or stipend-eligible externship in its Office of the General Counsel (Copyright). The program runs May–August 2027 with flexible scheduling and potential school credit. Compensation may be via course credit or school stipend; remote-permitted, based out of Washington, DC.

The extern will assist senior counsel on copyright, fair use, and audio licensing issues, with duties including research, drafting permissions, and rights management tasks.

Qualifications

• Fair Use Law experience or familiarity.
• Intellectual Property experience or familiarity.
• Prior experience with licensing issues is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate copyright issues in audio content (and occasional video).
• Research copyright issues.
• Draft and organize permissions agreements; assess licensing terms.
• Assist with Rights Management issues.
