Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Backend Engineer to join the Repository Management team. You will build secure, well-tested backend features using Ruby and GraphQL to support GitLab.com and self-managed instances.

You’ll ensure reliability, collaborate across teams, and leverage AI to speed delivery while maintaining quality. You will work on complex policy and repository management needs, with a focus on performance, observability, and scalable systems.

Qualifications

• Experience building backend web applications with Ruby and GraphQL.
• Understanding of relational databases, data modeling, caching and performance.
• Experience contributing to policy or rules-based features in web apps for reliability.
• Experience writing backend unit/integration tests and participating in code reviews.
• Experience using AI coding tools and reviewing their outputs for accuracy.
• Clear written and spoken English suitable for remote async work.
• Ability to manage priorities, take ownership and seek guidance when needed.

Responsibilities

• Develop secure, well-tested, performant features using Ruby and GraphQL.
• Tackle complex requirements while protecting system reliability.
• Contribute to backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic for repository management.
• Collaborate across teams and stakeholders, asynchronously and synchronously.
• Leverage AI tools for scoped work and critically review outputs.
• Write maintainable code following GitLab standards and participate in reviews.
• Improve reliability by monitoring health metrics, on-call activities, and observability.
