Job summary

GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer (Python) for the Agent Foundations stage. You will build the foundations for agentic AI experiences: scalable Python backends, secure APIs, and reliable data models across the AI Gateway and related services.

Work across teams to refine requirements, implement features, and improve tests and observability. You’ll contribute to a high-visibility platform that integrates AI with the software delivery lifecycle, collaborating asynchronously across

Qualifications

• Production Python backend experience, APIs, async processing, and data models.
• Experience with LangGraph or LangChain for AI-powered backends.
• API design experience (REST, GraphQL or gRPC) with scalability.
• Across-stack work in a mature codebase; familiarity with RoR and Vue.
• Experience finding and fixing performance bottlenecks.
• Clear written and verbal communication in a remote, async team.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain features for the Duo Agent Platform and AI Gateway.
• Build agentic flows and reusable parts with LangChain and LangGraph, incl. Flow Registry.
• Collaborate with PM, UX, frontend, backend and AI teams to refine requirements.
• Design and review APIs (GraphQL/REST) with reliable contracts for clients.
• Improve automated testing and evaluate agent/flow behavior.
• Share standards and learnings to raise quality of AI integration.
• Join Tier 2 on-call rotations and contribute to observability and resiliency.
• Monitor the competitive landscape to keep GitLab's agent platform best-in-class.
