Job summary

PLOS seeks an Associate Director, Publishing to provide strategic leadership for its journal portfolio from a remote-based location in the United States and other eligible regions. The role oversees a team of Publishers, guiding portfolio performance, market intelligence, and development of journals aligned with PLOS's mission.

The ideal candidate will drive portfolio priorities, manage publishing budgets, and partner with multiple departments to ensure a sustainable and high-value portfolio

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• Substantial experience launching Open Access journals from proposal to publication.
• Strong commercial and financial skills including budgeting, forecasting, and P&L ownership.
• Substantial STM publishing experience with increasing responsibility.
• Experience managing senior publishing professionals or portfolio leaders.
• Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans delivering measurable outcomes.
• Strong track record leading geographically distributed teams.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management across cultures and functions.
• Dedication to open access and transforming scholarly communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead portfolio strategy and performance for journal portfolios.
• Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation.
• Coach and develop a senior publishing team.
• Collaborate with Editorial, Sales, and Global Publishing Development.
• Partner with Marketing to strengthen journal positioning and demand generation.
• Guide development of new journals and publishing models.
