Job summary

Kleinfelder, a Forbes' Top Employer for Engineers in North America, is seeking On-Call Architectural Historians to support public and private sector projects throughout California. The role involves historical research, field surveys, and technical reports, with most work remote and some office reporting to San Diego.

Requirements include a BA or MA in Historic Preservation or related fields, 3–6 years experience in California, GIS and photography skills, and a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

• BA or higher in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, or closely related field.
• SOI Qualified architectural historian or historian preferred.
• 3–6 years of related experience in California.
• Familiar with preparing Department of Parks and Recreation Forms (DPR 523- series).
• Ability to travel and work outdoors in remote locations and for extended periods.
• GIS experience (ArcGIS Online, field maps), photography proficiency, CRM familiarity (CHRIS).

Responsibilities

• Fieldwork including research at in-person repositories and intensive-level surveys.
• Remote research, drafting historic contexts, and report writing.
• Resource recordation and evaluation based on NRHP, CHRH, and local regulations.
• Collaborate with historians, archaeologists, biologists, and project managers.
• Develop solutions to project challenges in a fast-paced consulting environment.
