Job summary

Spellbook is seeking a Backend / AI Systems Engineer to build the backend and AI workflows powering our product experiences. This hands-on role demands ownership, robust design, and thoughtful tradeoffs between latency, reliability, and scale.

You will work with Node.js, TypeScript, Express, MongoDB, Docker, and AWS to deliver low-latency services, efficient data access, and production-grade AI integrations. Join a collaborative team focused on product outcomes.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of production backend experience.
• Strong fundamentals in backend engineering and distributed systems.
• NoSQL/MongoDB data modeling and performance tuning.
• Ability to translate ambiguous problems into shipped outcomes.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Self-starter with curiosity and continuous improvement mindset.
• Team player balancing scalability with pragmatic delivery.

Responsibilities

• Build and scale backend systems that power Spellbook features.
• Design low-latency, high-reliability search, inference, and orchestration layers.
• Build and operate RAG retrieval with production-grade performance and data isolation.
• Own AI platform concerns: rate limiting, retries, consistency, fallbacks.
• Collaborate with Product and Design on latency, accuracy, UX tradeoffs.
• Use modern workflows, agent-assisted coding, with rigorous review and security.
• Participate in on-call and incident response to improve reliability.
