Job summary

Nelnet, Inc. is hiring an AI/ML Engineer to build and operate agentic AI systems, monitor deployed agents, and design scalable AI pipelines on AWS. You will collaborate with data scientists, product, and software teams to deploy production-ready agents and expand agentic capabilities across the organization.

The role emphasizes practical prompt/context engineering, evaluation, and governance in a hybrid work environment with on-site and remote options within the United States.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• U.S. Citizenship AND the ability to obtain a U.S. 6C Security Clearance.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in machine learning engineering, AI engineering, software engineering, or related roles.
• Demonstrated experience building agentic systems with large language models (tool calling, orchestration, multi-step workflows).
• Hands-on experience evaluating LLM and agent systems, including designing eval sets and interpreting results.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and deploy LLM-powered agents to solve concrete business problems.
• Own the day-to-day health of agents in production; monitor, diagnose, and upgrade as needed.
• Build and maintain evaluation suites for agent systems and scoring.
• Instrument agents with traces, tool calls, latency, and cost metrics.
• Design retrieval and context strategies (RAG, data access, caching).
• Build tools, APIs, and connectors for safe, reliable data interactions.
• Design scalable AI pipelines on AWS with IaC and CI/CD.
• Implement safety controls and audit trails in regulated environments.
• Expand agentic adoption across teams with reusable frameworks.
• Maintain clear documentation of architectures and data flows.
• Stay current with foundation models and agent tooling.
