Job summary

Next Step Systems Engineering Lead, AI Email Applications is a remote, hands-on leadership role. You own the architecture across backend services, APIs, and client apps, guiding a small team of senior engineers to deliver reliable AI-powered product experiences.

You must be willing to take a 60-minute coding assessment and drive decisions balancing latency, cost, reliability, and user experience in a fast-scaling environment.

Qualifications

• AI experience is required.
• Experience leading application or product engineering for complex systems.
• Hands-on background building and shipping backend systems.
• Experience building AI-powered products integrating ML/LLM capabilities.
• Strong technical judgment for decisions with incomplete information.
• Comfortable across backend and client platforms with deep expertise in at least one.
• Bias toward ownership, shipping, and learning from real-world usage.
• High standards for code quality and engineering fundamentals.

Responsibilities

• Own the application engineering strategy and execution across backend, mobile, and desktop.
• Design reliable systems for AI-powered workflows, including state, orchestration, retries, fallbacks, and failure handling.
• Build APIs and abstractions connecting AI systems to product experiences.
• Lead a small senior engineering team with design/code reviews and mentorship.
• Make high-impact trade-offs across latency, reliability, cost, security, and UX.
• Establish production foundations: observability, monitoring, testing, and operations.
