About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional Remote Agricultural Data Scientist to join our forward-thinking team. In this role, you will be responsible for analyzing vast datasets from various agricultural sources – including sensor data, weather patterns, soil conditions, and yield reports – to extract actionable insights that empower farmers. You will work independently, contributing to strategic decision-making from your home office and playing a vital role in shaping the future of data-driven agriculture for clients across **South Africa**, with a significant focus on the **Paarl** region.

Key Responsibilities

• Collect, clean, and preprocess diverse agricultural datasets from multiple sources, ensuring data integrity and quality.
• Develop and implement statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and predictive analytics to identify trends and forecast outcomes (e.g., yield prediction, disease outbreak probability).
• Design and conduct A/B tests and other experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of different farming strategies and technologies.
• Visualize complex data through dashboards and reports to communicate findings and recommendations clearly to stakeholders, including farmers and agronomists.
• Collaborate with the product development team to integrate data-driven insights into new agricultural technologies and platforms.
• Identify opportunities for improving data collection methods and data infrastructure.
• Stay current with the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and their applications in agriculture.
• Provide remote technical guidance and support on data-related matters to internal teams and external clients.
• Maintain documentation for data models, analyses, and methodologies.

Requirements

• Master's or Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Agricultural Science with a strong quantitative focus, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a Data Scientist, with demonstrable experience in the agricultural sector.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R, and experience with relevant libraries (e.g., pandas, scikit-learn, TensorFlow).
• Strong understanding of statistical modeling, machine learning techniques, and experimental design.
• Experience with databases (SQL/NoSQL) and data warehousing concepts.
• Familiarity with agricultural data types (e.g., sensor data, satellite imagery, yield maps) and challenges is essential.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
• Superb remote communication and data visualization skills, with the ability to explain complex findings to diverse audiences.
