Urban Institute seeks an Accounting Director to lead full-cycle accounting operations, ensure GAAP-compliant financial reporting, and oversee audits and internal controls. You will balance hands-on oversight with strategic process improvements and cross-functional collaboration across Finance, Grants & Contracts, HR, Technology & Data Science, and programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; CPA preferred.
• 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years in leadership.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial close, GL accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
• Experience supporting annual audits, including Single Audits.

Responsabilités

• Lead full-cycle accounting operations: GL, monthly/year-end close, reconciliations, accruals, allocations.
• Review significant transactions for GAAP compliance and audit readiness.
• Direct billing and revenue accounting for grants and government contracts; ensure invoicing accuracy.
• Oversee AR, cash application, aging, and collections; oversee AP, payroll and reporting; internal controls.
• Lead accounting staff development and cross-team collaboration to improve processes.
• Support for audits and compliance with federal awards, NICRA matters.
