New Beginnings, Inc. in Lewiston, ME, is seeking a Part-Time Non-Exempt Relief Youth Worker to provide coverage for regular vacations and to support Youth Development activities for residents across three programs.

The role includes supervising youth, facilitating group activities, transporting clients to appointments, and teaching independent living skills. Shifts may involve some nights and weekends in a residential setting.

Qualifications

• Mature adult with high school diploma or equivalent and 2+ years’ experience with high risk youth.
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
• Ability to teach independent living skills experientially.

• Basic professional writing skills and computer literacy.
• Good problem solving and high school level literacy.

Responsibilities

• Provide coverage for Youth Worker and Awake Night vacations.
• Work a recurring weekly schedule assigned by the Program Coordinator when not covering vacations.
• Record daily progress notes.
• Transport and accompany clients to appointments and meetings.
• Conduct meetings with youth and teach independent living skills.
• Monitor and dispense medications; participate in staff meetings.

Job description

Part Time Non-Exempt $20 per hour

Job Summary:

This position is designed to a) provide regular coverage for full time staff vacation periods; and b) provide extra coverage in the program, thereby permitting more time for the Youth Workers to be involved in Youth Development activities with the residents. Shifts may be available in any of the 3 programs New Beginnings’ operate.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Coverage
a) Provide coverage for Youth Worker and Awake Night vacations.
b) When not providing coverage for the above positions, the Relief Youth Worker will work a recurring weekly schedule assigned by the Program Coordinator.

2. Youth Work
a) Records daily progress notes.
b) Transports and accompanies clients to appointments and/or meetings as appropriate.
c) Conducts routine meetings with youth when filling in for a Youth Worker on vacation.
d) Advocates for youth and teaches youth advocacy skills to obtain needed services.
e) Organizes, facilitates, and participates in daily recreational activities as needed.
f) Teaches independent living skills through active participation in chores, cooking and daily activities.
g) Assesses and handles crisis situations, behavioral issues and rule violations.
h) Monitors and dispenses medication.

3. Other
a) Participates in staff meetings.
b) Facilitates client group meetings as needed or assigned.
c) Other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator.

Specifications and Qualifications:

Education and Training:
Mature adult with high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two years’ experience with high risk youth, youth in a residential setting or two years of college in social services related field.

Specialized Skills:
Drivers license; clean driving record; basic knowledge of and ability to teach independent living skills experientially; basic counseling and case management skills; basic professional writing skills; computer literacy.

Cognitive Requirements:
Good problem solving skills; literacy and general knowledge on at least a high school graduate level.

Physical Requirements:
Strength and dexterity to do basic household maintenance; ability to climb stairs.

Work Environment:
Residential setting for adolescents; shift work involving some nights and weekends; much time spent in a community environment; some outdoor activities. Ability to work as a member of a team required.
