Job summary

Mental Health Kokua in Kona, HI seeks Relief Residential Assistant to support residents with mental health challenges and help build life skills. The role is as-needed with flexible shifts and a strong emphasis on safety, respect, and recovery in daily activities.

You will mentor residents, assist with daily living tasks, supervise, provide medication support as appropriate, document progress, and collaborate with case managers to promote independence and community integration.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Preferred coursework in psychology, social work, or human development; or experience in behavioral health.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, emotional tolerance under stress, and ability to work in a team.
• Certifications: TB clearance, CPR, and First Aid (or willingness to obtain).
• Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening; ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Mentor and support residents to develop daily living skills and recovery goals.
• Teach cooking, budgeting, personal care, and household tasks.
• Maintain a safe environment, respond to emergencies, and document incidents.
• Monitor resident wellness, reinforce positive habits, and provide guidance.
• Oversee residents' self-administration of medications as appropriate.
• Assist with shopping, cleaning, maintenance, and daily tasks.
• Plan and participate in recreational, vocational, and educational outings.
• Complete accurate progress notes and service plans.
• Communicate with supervisors and case managers to support residents.

Are you a compassionate professional looking for flexible work while making a positive impact? Mental Health Kokua (MHK) is hiring Relief Residential Assistants on Kona to help residents with mental health challenges build life skills and move toward greater independence.

In this as-needed position, you’ll step in to cover shifts, provide direct support to residents, and ensure a safe, respectful environment where recovery can thrive.

• Mentoring & Support: Serve as a caring role model to help residents develop daily living skills, communicate effectively, and achieve recovery goals.
• Daily Living Skills: Teach and assist with cooking, budgeting, personal care, and household responsibilities.
• Safety & Crisis Response: Maintain a safe environment, respond to emergencies, and document incidents per MHK policy.
• Resident Supervision: Monitor resident wellness and behavior, reinforce positive habits, and provide guidance during challenges.
• Medication Support: Oversee residents’ self-administration of medications as appropriate.
• Household Operations: Assist with shopping, cleaning, maintenance coordination, and other essential daily tasks.
• Program Activities: Plan and participate in recreational, vocational, and educational outings.
• Clinical Documentation: Complete accurate, timely records including progress notes and service plans.
• Team Collaboration: Communicate effectively with supervisors and case managers to support residents.
• Flexibility: Be available to cover shifts as needed and maintain regular contact with your supervisor.
• Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent
