Relief Residential Assistant

Relief Oahu-Kinau Twnhse I. 24Hr, Honolulu, HI, US

POSITION TITLE: RELIEF RESIDENTIAL ASSISTANT

RESPONSIBLE TO: Residential Services Coordinator or designated Supervisor

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

POSITION GOALS:

To educate and motivate emotionally or mentally disabled adults toward community living through example and mentoring, within a residential setting.

To provide sufficient supervision and management to assure appropriate client care in a residential setting

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Serve as a caring and understanding role model whose example provides residents with a clear idea of behavior patterns they might emulate and goals they might aspire to.
  2. Teach residents basic living skills, such as cooking, personal grooming, and interpersonal relationships.
  3. Act clearly and with prudence in emergency situations to see that any endangered party receives available services. Report any incident immediately.
  4. Plan and provide social, recreational, educational, and/or vocational activities that seek to expand the residents’ interests.
  5. Assist with on-going household operations such as shopping, chore planning, residential maintenance, and related safety, health and sanitation measures. Monitor and report any plumbing, electrical, safety or carpentry problems; and arrange for repairs and upkeep as indicated.
  6. Assist residents in the attainment of mutual treatment and program goals.
  7. Assist in documentation of resident records; making progress notes, monthly summaries, service plans, and required forms.
  8. Provide care and supervision of residents which may include
    • Knowing whereabouts of residents at all times.
    • Reinforcing appropriate behavior on or off the premises.
    • Handling crisis situations.
    • Observing residents self-administration of medication.
  9. Other duties as assigned by Management/Supervisory staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience

College preferred, with course work in psychology, social work or human development, or equivalent experience in human services, or minimum high school equivalent. Computer literate. Shall have or be working towards competencies in providing services for dually diagnosed individuals.

Professional/Personal Skills

Serve as positive role model for people needing assistance with daily living skills and community acceptance. Desirable characteristics include tolerance in crisis or stressful situations; able to work as part of a team, good interpersonal and problem solving skills; flexibility; good oral written and communication skills.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
  • Current CPR & First Aid Certificates
  • *Pre-employment two-step TB Clearance and annual retest/re-certification (or in the case of a previous + PPD, documentation of the + test and a current TB x-ray and then annual symptom free re-certification)
  • *Pre-employment health evaluation/examination signed by a physician/APRN
  • Valid Hawaii driver’s license, current vehicle insurance & safety inspection
  • Safe driving record as documented by a Traffic Abstract
  • Official College Transcripts (mailed from the school directly to MHK)
  • Copies of current professional licenses held
  • Criminal Background Check
  • *Must be completed prior to direct contact with consumers/residents.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

May occasionally be required to lift up to 25 pounds in a work setting. Must talk and hear frequently for telephone use and basic communication. May periodically sit, stand, bend, stoop, twist, reach, walk and climb stairs. Must be able to drive to different locations, which requires the use of a personal vehicle.

NOTE: Relief Residential Assistants may not drive Agency vehicles or use their privately owned vehicle to conduct Agency business and are therefore not required to have a driver’s license, Traffic Abstract, vehicle insurance or safety check.
