POSITION SUMMARY

Performs duties in the care of adult and pediatric patients in medical/surgical, pediatric, and obstetrical settings in the primary care Ambulatory care setting and as needed in medically emergent situations. Reports to the Ambulatory & Outpatient Services Manager or designee for day to day activities and to the Chief Nursing Officer for healthcare related skills.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Utilizes the medical assistant healthcare process to assess, implement and evaluate care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and socio-cultural needs of the Ambulatory care patient and his/her family in collaboration with the RN staff under the direction of the provider.

Observes the patient's clinical condition; recognizes serious situations and with the RN staff, identifies, interprets, and initiates appropriate nursing interventions.

Screens patients, documenting chief complaint, vital signs, and pertinent information in the appropriate electronic medical record or downtime forms.

Assists client in collecting lab specimens observing Standard Precautions. Assists in transporting clients to other departments.

Performs treatments or procedures in accordance with hospital policy as ordered by licensed providers or nursing after demonstrating competency.

Administers medications upon physician's orders, in accordance with established policy.

Communicates with RN staff and the charge nurse in regards to the patient progress toward health goals. Documents patient care per hospital policy.

Assists clients in preparing for exams and assists physicians with exam if needed.

Assists physicians and nursing staff as needed in rendering emergency care to patients. When notified in advance, prepares appropriate materials for emergency treatment.

Maintains adequate supplies and equipment.

In the absence of lab personnel draws blood via vena puncture for tests after training and competency of performance.

Maintains current knowledge of department/hospital policies and procedures.

Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual healthcare judgments and actions.

Understands the developmental needs of all patients throughout the continuum of life. Is able to adjust care to these needs. Documentation reflects this understanding.

Provides guidance and leadership to other personnel in the form of in-services, orientation, and participation in committee activities.

Attends in-services and obtains required continuing education credits as required.

Participates in organizational and departmental performance improvement activities.

Safeguards the patient’s right to privacy by judiciously protecting

information of a confidential nature.

Follows all rules and regulations provided by the Alaska Board of Nursing for acceptable practice of the Medical Assistant in an Ambulatory Care setting.

Job Qualifications:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program. Must have Medical Assistant certificate in good standing. Ability to lift up to 70 pounds and spend long periods of time standing and walking. May be exposed to communicable diseases and hazardous materials. Must be able to pass the core competencies assigned to the unit annually
