Job summary

Salt River Project (SRP) in Tempe, AZ is seeking a Technician to perform programming, calibration, testing and maintenance of Power System Operation Technology equipment at generation, transmission, and distribution facilities. The role includes on-site project management, outage coordination, and QA/QC of protection and control systems.

Candidates should have completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent and 4+ years of relevant experience or progression toward senior roles.

Responsibilities

  • Perform programming, calibration, testing, and maintenance of protection equipment for generation, transmission, and distribution facilities.
  • Manage protection automation & control construction tasks on-site and coordinate outages.
  • Install, commission, and energize protective relaying systems and related devices.
  • Prepare commissioning and maintenance testing documentation for asset management and regulatory compliance.

Summary
  • Performs programming, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Power System Operation Technology equipment (protective relaying systems, telemetry devices, and other intelligent electronic devices) for Generation, Transmission, and Distribution facilities.
Protection Automation and Control Construction
  • Performs project management, testing, and QA/QC functions for Power System Operational Technology equipment (protective relaying systems, control systems, telemetry devices, and other intelligent electronic devices) for Generation, Transmission, and Distribution facilities.
    • Programs settings on microprocessor relays and other intelligent electronic devices
    • Commission and energizes protective relaying systems, telemetry devices, and other intelligent electronic devices through validation of wiring, settings, communication protocols and logic
    • Uses test equipment to simulate faults to validate protective relay systems
    • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance of protective relaying systems and other intelligent electronic devices
    • Develops and submits all commissioning and maintenance testing documentation for asset management and regulatory compliance
    • Must be available to work overtime and accept callouts
    • Assists with Protection Automation & Control Construction responsibilities as assigned
Protection Automation & Control Construction
  • Provides on-site project management (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling) by providing direction and oversight to field personnel and contingent workforces
  • Outage coordination for generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial customers
  • Maintains quality assurance and quality control through reviewing and correcting protection and control engineering design prints
  • Responsible for installation strategy (panel construction, procurement, wire pull schedules, field wiring, etc.)
  • Performs installation quality assurance and quality control through field wiring checks and supporting with scheme checks
  • Must be available to work overtime to meet project milestones
  • Assists with Relay Commissioning & Testing responsibilities as assigned
Education

Completion of an appropriate Apprenticeship program or equivalent.

Experience

This position may be filled at one of the two (2) levels listed below, based on the candidate’s relevant experience and demonstrated proficiency in the required knowledge, skills, and competencies.

  • Technician II: Requires a minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience or completion of a four‑year apprenticeship or equivalent training program.
  • Senior Technician: Requires a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Relay Technician 2 or a minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience.

Eligibility for advancement (progression) to the next level in the same role is based on overall job performance, mastery of all functional responsibilities, and time in position, as assessed by the supervisor.

Additional Requirements and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the principles of electrical and electronic theory
  • Knowledge of algebra, geometric, trigonometric, and statistical concepts, techniques, and procedures
  • Knowledge of personal computer operation and transient cyber assets Knowledge of relay and test set applications
  • Knowledge and understanding of protective relay theory, principles, and applications
  • Knowledge of commissioning, protective system testing and construction processes
  • Must be available to work overtime
  • Performs related work as required and/or assigned
  • Attends training programs, seminars, conferences, and meetings
  • Assists engineers and other personnel
  • Assists in directing other technicians, apprentices, and trades helpers
Hybrid Workplace

SRP currently offers a hybrid workplace, which allows employees whose jobs can be performed remotely, and who have sufficient technical capability, to telework up to three days per week. Although teleworking is available, all employees must live and work in Arizona.
