Job summary

San Bernardino County Animal Care Division seeks a dedicated Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to support professional medical staff across county shelter facilities. Duties include administering medications, medical recordkeeping, preparing animals for surgery, and training staff on first aid, disease recognition, and prevention.

This position may be assigned to mobile clinics for vaccines and spay/neuter services.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid RVT Certificate issued by the California Veterinary Medical Board.
  • DEA registration required within 90 days of employment.
  • Willingness to perform euthanasia when needed.
  • Availability to work weekends is required and must be noted on the application.

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications and monitor treatment per veterinary staff instructions.
  • Maintain medical records and documentation for shelter animals.
  • Prepare animals for surgery and assist veterinary staff as needed.
  • Provide training to shelter staff on animal first aid, disease recognition, and prevention.
  • Perform humane euthanasia when required and ensure proper protocols are followed.
  • Assist with mobile clinic operations, vaccines, and spay/neuter services when deployed.
  • Manage medical treatment and supply records and support facility sanitation.

Job description

UP TO $2,000 IN HIRING BONUS! *

The Animal Care Division within the Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a dedicated Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to support professional medical staff across San Bernardino County’s animal shelter facilities. The RVT will perform routine and para-professional duties related to the care and treatment of animals, including administering medications, maintaining medical records, preparing animals for surgery, and providing training to shelter staff on animal first aid, disease recognition, and prevention. Additional responsibilities include performing humane euthanasia when required, recommending appropriate care and treatment procedures, maintaining facility cleanliness, managing medical treatment and supply records, and completing other duties as assigned by the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).

This position may also include assignments in mobile clinic operations, providing vaccines and spay/neuter services to both the public and shelter animals. RVTs may be placed at any of the County’s shelter locations or mobile clinic sites based on operational needs.

The RVT will be part of a growing veterinary services team dedicated to supporting the animals and community members of San Bernardino County. The Department of Public Health has recently procured its first mobile veterinary clinic and is actively constructing a new, state-of-the-art County Animal Care Center that will feature a full veterinary hospital.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

  • Visa Sponsorship: Please note San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.
  • Physical: Must be able to lift and restrain small to very large animals, both domestic and wild, which may weigh up to 100 pounds.
  • Environmental: Will be exposed to cleaning and disinfectant chemicals at commercial facilities and animal control shelters.
  • Travel/License: Travel throughout the County may be required and employees will be required to make provisions for such transportation.
  • DEA Registration: Within 90 days of employment, candidates must obtain a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration to order and administer veterinary medical drugs at the animal shelter facilities.
  • RegisteredVet Tech Certification: Employees must maintain an active Registered Veterinary Technician certification throughout employment.

Animal Euthanasia: Applicants must be able to perform euthanasia of sick, injured, or non-adopted impounded animals.

Availability: This position requires working on the weekends. Candidates must indicate availability for weekend work on the application to be considered.

Registration: Must possess and maintain a valid Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Certificate issued by the State of California Veterinary Medical Board. Applicants must indicate number and expiration date in the Certificates andLicenses section of the application.
