The City of Fresno is seeking a skilled Registered Veterinary Technician to join our fast-paced Animal Center team, assisting with surgeries, administering medications and vaccines, and supporting vital animal care efforts.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist the Veterinarian with exams, treatments, surgeries, and high-volume spay/neuter.
  • Administer vaccines, medications, and microchips; maintain accurate medical records.
  • Provide pre- and post-operative care and monitor animals during surgery and recovery.
  • Safely handle, restrain, feed, exercise, and clean animals and their living areas.
  • Perform lab tests, collect specimens, and manage medical waste per protocols.
  • Monitor medical equipment, maintain inventory, and manage controlled substances.
  • Support animal cruelty investigations with examinations, documentation, and expertise.
  • Train and provide lead directions to staff and volunteers on medical procedures.
  • Ensure safe, humane animal handling using approved protocols.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and data in the kennel management system.
  • Support animal care programs, community events, and public inquiries.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Incumbents assigned to the Animal Center will be exposed to a working environment with animals (primarily dogs and cats) which may lead to possible exposure of unpleasant odors and noises, allergens, interactions with animals, and possible exposure to zoonotic diseases; and may be required to handle and restrain animals humanely and safely using approved protocols and practices and may be required to handle and restrain animals humanely and safely using approved protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) and practices including assisting in cleaning and disinfecting kennel areas, food dishes and equipment along with feeding and exercising animals.

Duties and schedules may vary, please inquire about specific duties and/or schedules if called upon for an interview. Incumbents may be required to work any shift; nights, weekends, and holidays and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.

The current vacancies exist in the Animal Center Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for further consideration:

Possession of a current and valid certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) issued by the Veterinary Medical Board of the State of California. Failure to maintain the valid certification for the entire term of employment in this job class shall be cause for termination.

Registered Veterinary Technicians who are licensed in another State may be qualified but must acquire a valid license from the State of California at time of appointment.

APPLICANTS MUST ATTACH A COPY OF VALID CERTIFICATION AS A REGISTERED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN (RVT) ISSUED BY THE VETERINARY MEDICAL BOARD OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. Applications lacking the documentation may be rejected.

Additional Requirements

The work experience section MUST be completed with detailed duties, dates and weekly hours worked for each title held. Incumbents may be required to obtain and maintain a valid Drug Enforcement Agency

(DEA) license based on operational needs. Failure to obtain and maintain DEA licensure in this job class based on operational need shall be cause for termination.

The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.

The Selection Process

The examination process may consist of the following:

APPLICATION REVIEW - Qualifying Only: Application materials submitted online will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates will be invited before the Panel Interview Board. Selection of the most qualified candidates will be based upon those applications demonstrating the greatest breadth and depth of applicable training, experience and education. Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for a proper evaluation.

ORAL EXAMINATION - 100%: A panel of subject matter experts may conduct a job-related panel interview to evaluate a candidate's training, experience, and personal traits for the position. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.

The oral exam date is to be determined.

Veteran’s Preference

If an examination is conducted for a position within the classified service, qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score. Candidates must submit a copy of their DD214 Member 4 form or electronic copy indicating honorable discharge with each application prior to the filing deadline.
