Job summary

San Bernardino County is recruiting a full-time Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) for the Big Bear Alpine Zoo. Primary duties include wildlife rehabilitation, assisting with physical exams, administering medications, diagnostics, and documenting animal behavior.

Applicants must obtain RVT licensure within six months of hire and must be able to work weekends and holidays in mountain weather conditions in Big Bear, CA. Experience with exotic animals is preferred.

San Bernardino County Special Districts, Big Bear Park and Recreation Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)

The San Bernardino County Special Districts, Big Bear Park and Recreation is recruiting for a full-time Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to perform general and routine animal care tasks at the District's Big Bear Alpine Zoo. Primary duties include wildlife rehabilitation, assisting with physical examinations, administering medications, assisting with diagnostics to include radiographs, blood analysis, observation and documentation of animal behavior. Additional duties include husbandry of exotic animals, maintaining and cleaning animal enclosures, answering questions from the public, assisting with presentations, and performing light maintenance in and around animal enclosures.

This position is located in the mountain area of Big Bear (approximately 1 hour/45 miles from downtown San Bernardino).

The County also offers an alternative Modified Benefits Option (MBO) that provides a wage differential.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

License: Must obtain a Registered Veterinary Technician license within six (6) months of hire or be terminated.

Availability: Must be able to work in the mountain area of Big Bear, CA and report to work in extreme weather conditions such as ice and snow. Please indicate availability for Big Bear on Agency Wide Question #3. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

Travel: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.

Working Conditions: Applicants must be able to: work outdoors in varying mountain weather conditions, drive in all weather conditions, lift and/or carry heavy objects up to fifty (50) pounds, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend over, crawl, and perform other physical activities in the performance of job duties for this position.

Possession of a valid Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license, or have completed an Accredited Veterinary Technician program.

A copy of the Veterinary Technician license and/or proof of completion of the Accredited Veterinary Technician program must be submitted with the application to be considered.

Note: The following experience is not considered qualifying: Personal, non-work related experience. This includes, but is not limited to, taking care of pets or dog sitting; breeding animals; and working in facilities such as pet boarding or grooming.

Veterinary support experience with exotic animals is preferred. Coursework or experience in wildlife rehabilitation/husbandry is highly desirable. Six (6) months of experience providing animal care, feeding, exercising, observing/documenting behavior, and cleaning enclosures, in a zoo, hospital/clinic, wildlife rehabilitation center or similar facility.
