Summary

The Registered Respiratory Therapist provides professional respiratory care to patients from newborns to geriatrics. Responsibilities include critical care, general patient care, and related activities with predictable duties. Incumbents are accountable to the North Carolina Board of Respiratory Care for practicing within the scope of the North Carolina Respiratory Care Practice Act.

Responsibilities

1. Administers standard respiratory care, including aerosol medication delivery, pulmonary function testing, breathing exercises, oxygen therapy, arterial cannulation, and arterial punctures. Manages airways including aspiration, tracheostomy care, tube changes, endotracheal intubations, and extubations. Performs pulmonary function testing as needed.
2. May be required to be on-call during days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
3. Performs ventilator care, including setup, verification, patient monitoring, and weaning techniques.
4. Maintains and enhances job knowledge and skills. Serves as a resource to staff, physicians, and students. Provides training and may assume Charge Therapist responsibilities.
5. Records all pertinent patient care information accurately in the electronic medical record system, following hospital and departmental policies.

Other Requirements

• Graduate of a CAHEA-approved respiratory care training program.
• Current license to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in North Carolina.
• Certified Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or eligible to sit for the exam.
• Current BCLS and ACLS certifications.
