Job summary

Reid Health in Indiana is seeking a Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) for PRN coverage in the Sleep Laboratory. The role includes patient setup, electrode placement, CPAP/BiPAP titration and scoring of sleep studies, with emphasis on accurate documentation and adherence to policy.

The technician will support other healthcare team members, handle routine tasks, and participate in maintaining equipment and supplies while complying with CPR and licensure requirements.

Qualifications

  • Must become registered polysomnography technologist within one year
  • Minimum 18 months medical experience; 6 months in Sleep Lab
  • Indiana Respiratory Care Practitioner license; CPR certification

Responsibilities

  • Identifies patient needs as part of assessment.
  • Establishes care priorities and provides necessary patient care.
  • Documents narrative notes on patient response to care.
  • Transcribes physician orders and compiles test results.
  • Follows Sleep Disorders Center policies and AASM guidelines.
  • Scoring of Home Sleep Studies per AASM guidelines.
  • Monitors inventory and orders supplies.
  • Enter charges for Sleep Studies.
  • Manage CPAP/BiPAP titration per policy.

Job description

Registered Polysomnography Technologist - PRN 3740 Sleep Laboratory

Schedule: PRN as needed. Coverage between 830p to 630a.

About the Position

The Registered Polysomnography Technician (RPSGT) assumes responsibility and accountability for performing a wide variety of sleep diagnostic and therapeutic services in accordance with established departmental policies. The technician will provide support for other healthcare members by assisting in transporting, positioning and moving patients. The technician will perform general tasks as assigned such as answering the telephone, cleaning of equipment and checking for supplies and/ contacting the respiratory clerk or Material Handling for re-ordering supplies that are low. The technician will also be able to initiate all appropriate paperwork and retrieve records as needed. Other tasks include electrode and sensor placement as well as room turnover.

Overview of Responsibilities
  • Identifies physical, social and psychological needs of the patient, family, and significant other as part of the patient assessment.
  • Establishes priorities of care and provides necessary patient care as needed.
  • Documents concise narrative notes that reflect the patient’s response to care given.
  • Transcribes and implements physician’s orders accurately as well as compiles test results of patient to be forward to the physician.
  • Utilizes policies, procedures, protocols and standards of care for Sleep Disorders Center.
  • Comply with AASM continuing education requirements.
  • Scoring of Home Sleep Studies per AASM guidelines.
  • Monitors inventory and orders supplies as needed.
  • Entering of charges for Sleep Studies.
  • Access email, EPIC in basket, EPIC work queues daily and as needed.
  • Recognizes the need for and performs appropriate measures in emergency situations. Initiates airway management, AED placement and CPR when indicated.
  • Initiates, monitors and manages CPAP/BiPAP titration in accordance with department policy and procedure.
  • Measures accurately the position of electrodes and sensor placement for testing procedure.
  • Responsible for the set-up and management of oxygen used during testing in accordance with department policy and procedure.
  • Distinguishes artifact potentials from true cerebral potentials and takes necessary steps to eliminate artifact.
  • Monitors feedback from patient and/or significant others and suggest modification from feedback.
Education & Experience
  • Education Required: After qualifications are met according to the AASM guidelines, full time employees will have one year to become a Registered Polysomnography Technologist.
  • Experience Preferred: 18 months of medical experience in a healthcare setting, 6 months experience in a Sleep Lab, registered by the National Board of Polysomnography Technicians, certified or registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care, completion of a basic cardiac arrhythmia class.
Licensure & Certification
  • Licensure in the State of Indiana as a Respiratory Care Practitioner
  • Licensure in the health care field is preferred.
  • Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
