Job summary

ReNew Life Recovery Services in Danville, Virginia, is seeking a compassionate Registered Peer Recovery Specialist to join our behavioral health and substance use treatment team.

You will provide individual and group peer support, using lived experience to inspire hope, engagement, and progress toward recovery goals within a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • Current Virginia Registered Peer Recovery Specialist credential or eligibility for the position.
  • Completion of required peer recovery specialist training and certification requirements.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1-3 years of peer support, recovery services, behavioral health, or related experience preferred.
  • Ability to appropriately use lived experience as part of professional peer support.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group peer recovery support.
  • Use lived experience to encourage hope, engagement, and self-advocacy.
  • Help individuals identify recovery goals and develop practical steps toward achieving them.
  • Support wellness and recovery planning.
  • Connect clients with treatment, housing, employment, education, transportation, and community resources.
  • Encourage participation in behavioral health and substance use treatment.
  • Assist individuals in developing natural supports and community connections.
  • Provide recovery education, encouragement, and relapse-prevention support.
  • Advocate for client needs while promoting independence and personal responsibility.
  • Collaborate with therapists, substance use counselors, QMHPs, nurses, psychiatric providers, and other members of the treatment team.
  • Participate in treatment-team meetings and care coordination.
  • Maintain accurate and timely service documentation.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Follow applicable Virginia DBHDS, DMAS, organizational, and CARF requirements.

ReNew Life Recovery Services is seeking a compassionate and dependable Registered Peer Recovery Specialist to join our growing behavioral health and substance use treatment team in Danville, Virginia.

This role is ideal for someone who can use lived recovery experience in a professional and purposeful way to inspire hope, strengthen engagement, and help individuals move toward greater stability and independence.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting individuals with mental health, substance use, and co-occurring needs.

What You Will Do

What We Are Looking For
  • Current Virginia Registered Peer Recovery Specialist credential or eligibility appropriate for the position
  • Completion of required peer recovery specialist training and certification requirements

  • Ability to appropriately use lived experience as part of professional peer support

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Experience supporting individuals with substance use disorders
  • Mental health peer support experience
  • Co-occurring mental health and substance use experience
  • Group facilitation experience
  • Community outreach experience
  • Recovery navigation or care coordination experience
  • Virginia DBHDS program experience
  • Virginia Medicaid or DMAS experience
  • Experience working within a CARF-accredited organization
Compensation

$23-$27 per hour

This range is intentionally above the current Virginia average of about $20.21 per hour for recovery specialists, while remaining competitive with current peer recovery openings. A recent Danville contract posting advertised approximately $18.18-$31.82 per hour, with an additional increase for Registered Peer Recovery Specialists.

Compensation will be based on credentials, experience, peer-support background, and overall qualifications.
