Registered Nurse Virtual Nurse - Med Surg

SUMMARY:

A virtual registered nurse (RN) is responsible for the remote patient management and care in the inpatient setting. The virtual RN serves as a member of the healthcare team by collaborating, communicating, and facilitating care with all clinicians, patients, and families. The virtual RN supports nurses from a remote location who are working in the patient care unit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides direct and indirect patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required, and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure safe patient care through a virtual platform.
  2. Gathers initial nursing histories, assesses patients' conditions, and develops individual care plans in collaboration with direct care nurse; maintains patient documentation.
  3. Receives and reviews preceding shift reports and floor nurse reports; makes complete rounds of all units, and notes patients' condition.
  4. Notifies appropriate clinician regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
  5. Works with direct care RN to implement and reinforce patient instructional needs with patient and family offering informational material and pointing out special areas of concern through a virtual platform.
  6. Evaluates outcomes of patient care and, working with the direct care nurse, adjusts nursing care processes as necessary to ensure optimal patient care.
  7. Identifies and resolves workplace health and safety issues.
  8. May serve as secondary RN when appropriate to do so through a virtual platform to confirm medications, patient assessment, laboratory, and blood products.
  9. Complies with policies, procedures, regulations, and standards and takes corrective action when violations occur.
  10. Orients, instructs, and educates assigned personnel.
  11. Adheres to and supports team members in exhibiting TMCH values of integrity, community, compassion, and dedication.
  12. Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies, and standards.
  13. Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Graduation from a qualified, nationally accredited nursing program. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of five (5) years in acute care experience is required.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Current RN licensure permitting work in the State of Arizona and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Certification in specialty preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of direct patient care and critical care procedures and techniques, tools, and responses required to ensure optimal patient care.
  2. Knowledge of exam indicators, contraindications, and patient preparation.
  3. Skill in communicating in a clear and concise manner with staff involved in critical care and physicians to ensure the proper care of patients.
  4. Skill in reading 12-lead EKG.
  5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  6. Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
  7. Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action.
  8. Ability to speak and communicate effectively.
  9. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  10. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  11. Ability to fluently work with virtual nursing technology.
