Registered Nurse (RN) - Staff

Employees in this classification are responsible for providing professional nursing care in an assigned specialty or sub-specialty clinic. They perform a variety of general and specialized nursing duties as part of a total health care team to provide the patient with complete evaluations. Employees in this position generally assist the head nurse in the supervision of other clinic personnel and may substitute for this person in the event of his/her absence. May supervise and instruct subordinate nursing personnel. Receives supervision from head nurse or physician, functions independently within guidelines. May supervise ancillary nursing personnel in the performance of certain tasks, and assists in training personnel. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Serves as the primary clinical nurse supporting Pediatricspecialists in the delivery of comprehensive outpatient specialtycare, providing clinical support, patient education, carecoordination, and nursing services for a variety of pediatricspecialty populations.
  • Provides professional nursing care to pediatric patients in thePediatric Nephrology and Pediatric Specialty clinics utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, andevaluation.
  • Serves as the primary clinical nurse supporting the PediatricNephrologist and other Pediatric Specialists as assigned in thedelivery of comprehensive outpatient specialty care for childrenwith complex medical needs.
  • Performs patient assessments including obtaining medicalhistories, medication reconciliation, vital signs, growthmeasurements, and clinical documentation within the electronicmedical record.
  • Coordinates patient care before, during, and after clinicvisits to promote continuity of care and timely access to specialtyservices.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding diseaseprocesses, medications, treatment plans, laboratory testing,imaging, nutrition, hydration, home monitoring, and follow-upcare.
  • Reviews laboratory and diagnostic results with providers andassists in communicating treatment recommendations and care plansto patients and families.
  • Coordinates referrals, specialty testing, hospital follow-up,infusion services, dialysis coordination (when applicable), andmultidisciplinary care with internal and external healthcareproviders.
  • Assists with medication prior authorizations, prescriptionrefills, durable medical equipment requests, and other clinicaldocumentation necessary to support patient care.
  • Triages incoming patient calls, electronic messages, and urgentclinical concerns utilizing established protocols and providerguidance.
  • Maintains accurate clinical documentation within the electronicmedical record while ensuring compliance with TTUHSC policies,HIPAA requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, clinicalworkflow optimization, and patient safety activities.
  • Collaborates effectively with physicians, advanced practiceproviders, medical assistants, patient services specialists,laboratory personnel, pharmacists, social workers, and othermembers of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Supports the educational mission of TTUHSC by fostering apositive learning environment for medical students, residents, andother learners.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of one year of nursing experience in pediatrics,ambulatory care, family medicine, nephrology, or another specialtypractice.
  • Previous experience in an outpatient clinic, academic medicalpractice, or pediatric specialty clinic.
  • Knowledge of insurance authorization processes, medicationprior authorizations, and referral coordination is preferred.
  • Experience utilizing electronic medical records (Epicpreferred; other EMR experience acceptable).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.

Required Qualifications

Completion of a Board of Nursing accredited program of professional nursing or scheduled to complete a program of professional nursing within 120 days of applying for a position. Current Registered Nursing license in the state of Texas or the attainment of a temporary permit from the Board of Nursing to practice professional nursing pending full licensure in the state of Texas. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) on the first attempt. No experience required.

Visa Information
