Located in Largo in the heart of Prince George’s County, our new state-of-the-art regional medical center (UM Capital Region Medical Center) will provide improved access to primary and ambulatory care services, and serve as a tertiary care center for critically ill patients. In addition, our new space will allow us to expand our offerings as a community partner to help improve the health status of Prince George’s County residents.

Job Description

I. General Summary

This role is reserved for new graduates or nurses with less than 12 months of experience. The nurse will utilize this time to learn the institution and nursing practice. It is expected that a nurse in this role successfully pass the probationary period within 12 months (18 months maximum with a defined action plan developed with the manager). The nurse will utilize the nursing process as the framework for practice as a professional nurse, participate in activities to develop their own practice, and support group practice goals at the unit level. They will function effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team and are accountable to patients, families, team members, and the nurse manager for the care provided and work performance.

II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

Clinical Practice/Care Delivery
  • Novice; focus on learning
  • Uses evidence-based practices and accesses appropriate resources
  • Follows unit protocols, documentation, and pathways
  • Involves patient and family in care; follows patient and family-centered care principles
  • Conducts needs assessments and initiates patient/family education
  • Assists with precepting students, PCTs, or peers for isolated days; may assist with share or shadow days as needed
Professional Development
  • Practices according to the Nurse Job Charter and Behavioral Standards
  • Participates in education and competency completion for self-development
  • Completes orientation within the specified timeframe
  • Attends mandatory training and educational offerings
Service Quality/Safety
  • Follows protocols addressing quality indicators
  • Supports process improvement initiatives
  • Contributes to patient/family satisfaction improvement efforts
  • Addresses potential issues proactively
Unit Operations
  • Supports Charge Nurse role and demonstrates understanding of responsibilities
  • Contributes to teamwork and participates in meetings and decision-making
  • Supports organizational initiatives and maintains standards for unit operations
Qualifications
  • Maryland RN licensure or eligibility via Compact agreement
  • Diploma or associate degree in nursing
  • Current BLS certification; additional certifications as required by the unit
  • Ability to learn computer systems and demonstrate effective communication skills
Working Conditions
  • May require weekend, shift, holiday, on-call, and overtime work
  • Requires lifting, standing, and walking; exposure to infectious diseases with proper precautions
Patient Safety
  • Ensures safety in job functions and participates in safety initiatives
  • Reports risks and adverse events; follows policies and maintains good communication
