Overview
The psychiatric treatment of children and adolescents with severe emotional, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental disabilities is best accomplished within a comprehensive treatment program specifically designed to meet individualized needs. For this reason, Southwood Psychiatric Hospital has created an Intellectual Developmental Disability / Autism Spectrum Disorder (IDD/ASD) Residential Treatment Program. Located in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania, the IDD/ASD Program provides treatment for up to 44 males between the ages of 6 and 21 years.
Responsibilities
- Provide and coordinate care by assessing patients’ physical and behavioral health needs.
- Develop and implement nursing care plans.
- Maintain medical records and educate patients and their families about various physical and behavioral health conditions.
- Provide nursing care within the standards and scope of nursing practice as defined by state Nurse Practice Act regulations, policies, procedures, and protocols, as well as facility and corporate policies.
- Ensure physicians’ orders are legible if taken verbally and transcribed appropriately per policy and procedure.
- Assess patients’ status continuously and document pertinent information.
- Notify physicians of significant changes such as difficulties with detox, medical emergencies, changes in medical status regarding medications, and related challenges.
- Complete initial nursing treatment plans upon admission and ensure all plans are specific to assessed needs.
- Use universal precautions in providing direct patient care.
- Administer medications accurately as ordered.
- Document controlled substance medication administration accurately on required documents.
- Complete admission and discharge processing efficiently and accurately.
- Maintain therapeutic rapport with patients by respecting boundaries, personal space, and giving patients attention while maintaining professional detachment.
- Coordinate activities of the unit as directed.
- Communicate professionally with patients, visitors, co-workers, and others involved in treatment.
Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
- Possess a current RN license or be eligible to practice nursing according to state requirements.
- At least one year of nursing experience; psychiatric, mental, behavioral, or substance use nursing experience is a plus.
- CPR, de-escalation, and restraint certification required (training available upon hire).
- First aid may be required based on state or facility requirements.
