Registered Nurse (RN)- Operating Room

General Summary
This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses with more than 12 months of experience. Provides and coordinates independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team. Utilizes the institution’s care delivery and professional practice models as the frame of reference for practicing as a professional nurse. Participates in activities to develop own practice and support group practice goals at the unit level. Is accountable to the patient, family, and team members for care provided and to the nurse manager for overall work performance. Adheres to Service Standards and aligns with the Nursing Mission, Vision, and Values.
Clinical Practice:
- Competency in care of unit-specific patient populations; practices independently with solid knowledge and clinical skills; engaged in advancing own practice.
- Serves as a clinical resource for others.
- Applies and integrates evidence into practice.
- Functions effectively in roles specific to the unit, such as arrest team for ICU, triage for ED, etc.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to plan and coordinate care; advocates independently for patient/family needs.
- Models practice consistent with unit operations to ensure safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, patient-centered care.
Professional Development:
- Engaged in advancing own practice.
- Responsible for maintaining competencies required for the patient care setting; focuses on professional growth.
- Attends unit-based staff development independently.
- Demonstrates ability to serve as a trained preceptor and coach for new nurses and students.
- Contributes to developing/evaluating unit-based orientation and education activities.
- Supports nursing personnel skills and development.
- Completes CEUs annually per facility requirements.
Service/Quality:
- Contributes to unit-based outcomes related to National Hospital Quality Measures, Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators, and Facility Operational Plans.
- Supports research, Evidence-Based Practice, and Quality Improvement initiatives.
- Delivers high-quality, safe, patient-centered care exceeding service expectations.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory standards; participates in tracer activities as needed.
Patient Safety:
- Acts to correct risks to patient safety.
- Reports adverse events and near misses.
- Implements policies, procedures, and guidelines consistently.
- Maintains effective communication and teamwork.
- Identifies and reports potential risks in processes, procedures, and devices.
- Participates in safety initiatives.
Operations:
- Functions effectively as a charge nurse.
- Participates in team building and governance activities.
- Provides feedback and participates in recruitment and retention efforts.
Unit Specifics:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, TASKS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participates proactively in the surgical process as part of a team.
- Organizes resources for effective case management.
- Supervises and directs patient care in the operating/procedure room.
- Efficiently organizes nursing activities and delegates appropriately.
- Uses supplies economically, manages turnover time, and assists with inventory.
- Addresses patient needs specific to surgical procedures.
- Transports patients safely to/from the operating/procedure room.
- Verifies patient identity and procedure details per policy.
- Reviews medical records to ensure continuity of care.
- Provides comfort, reassurance, and maintains patient dignity.
- Prepares the operating/procedure room collaboratively.
- Verifies sterility and handles tissue specimens correctly.
- Maintains updated physician preference cards.
- Ensures proper patient positioning and monitors throughout procedures.
- Administers medications as ordered and documents appropriately.
- Monitors patient condition and documents during procedures.
- Follows physician orders and policies accurately.
- Maintains sterile techniques and verifies correct site and equipment.
- Performs time outs and counts sponges, needles, sharps, and instruments.
- Performs surgical preparation and other duties as assigned.
