Job summary

Duke University Health System in Durham, NC seeks an experienced Registered Nurse for the General Pediatrics Unit. This on-site role supports a developing 8-bed unit expanding to 16 beds in 2027, with 3-4 patient assignments and a charge nurse for support.

Schedule is full-time, three 12-hour shifts (7 a.m.–7 p.m.), day/night rotation, totaling 36 hours per week. Relocation assistance up to $8,000 and a comprehensive Total Rewards package are available.

Qualifications

• 1 year pediatric nursing experience or 1 year adult Med/Surg experience.
• Must have 1 full year of nursing experience.
• Current NC RN license or compact license to practice in NC.
• BLS certification required.
• Graduation from an accredited nursing program (BSN/ADN/diploma).
• Must enroll in BSN if no BSN by start date and complete within five years.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional nursing care per care plans and NC Board of Nursing scope.
• Document nursing care and use professional judgment to individualize plans.
• Delegate tasks and supervise other licensed and unlicensed staff.
• Assist in delivery of nursing care and act as team leader or charge nurse.
• Monitor environment and equipment; ensure safety and resource readiness.

What you can expect

The General Pediatrics Unit is an 8-bed acute care unit that is projected to expand to 16 beds in January 2027. The unit provides care for a diverse pediatric population with a wide range of general medical and surgical needs. Most patients on this unit will have an anticipated length of stay of three days or less. RNs will care for an assignment of 3-4 patients with support from a charge nurse and nursing care assistant.

How you will make an impact

• Plan and provide professional nursing care for patients in accordance with the medical and nursing plans of care and established policies and procedures. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
• Plan, provide, supervise and document professional nursing care utilizing the nursing process for patients in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures. Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on assessment of the patient's baseline needs and response to care.
• Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
• Assist other nursing personnel in the delivery of nursing care and act as team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit as assigned.
• Monitor and initiate corrective action to maintain the environment of care including equipment and material resources.
• Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings. Act as preceptor and support the development of other staff and formal learners.
• Participate in the identification of clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and in performance improvement activities.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

What you will need

• Prefer nurses with 1 year of pediatric experience or 1 year of adult Med/Surg experience.
• Must have 1 full year of nursing experience.
• Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) OR Associate's Degree in Nursing OR Nursing Diploma program.
• All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.
• Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
• BLS Certification required.
