Job summary

Duke Careers seeks a Registered Nurse (December 2026 grad) for the Peds Transplant & Cellular Therapy unit at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. This high-acuity pediatric unit cares for transplant, cell therapy and oncology patients, with 1:1 or 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratios and 12-hour shifts.

You will plan, provide and document nursing care, educate families, delegate tasks, and participate in rounds and performance improvement.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher, Associate’s Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program.
• Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or compact RN license.
• BLS certification required.
• Ability to document assessments, plans of care, interventions, evaluations and reevaluations of patient status.
• Ability to educate patients and families and work with the healthcare team.

Responsibilities

• Plan, provide, supervise and document professional nursing care using the nursing process in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.
• Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on each patient’s baseline needs and response to care.
• Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the registered nurse as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
• Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
• Assist nursing personnel in delivering care and serve as a team leader or charge nurse for a group of patients or an entire unit, as assigned.
• Monitor the environment of care and initiate corrective action involving equipment and material resources.
• Maintain required competencies, identify learning needs, participate in professional development and support the development of staff and formal learners.
• Participate in clinical and operational performance improvement activities and perform other related duties incidental to the work described.

What you can expect

The Peds Transplant & Cellular Therapy unit, DCT 4A, is comprised of 17 beds and serves a blended patient population of pediatric transplant, cell therapy and general pediatric oncology, with an emphasis on high-risk oncology. Our team is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.

The DCT 4A team cares for oncology and sickle cell patients, as well as patients with metabolic and genetic disorders. Nurses in this unit work as part of a multidisciplinary team and have the opportunity to participate in rounds on their patients. Nursing care is patient- and family-centered, with primary nursing teams delivering care alongside members of various other disciplines. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1 or 1:3, depending on acuity, and the unit is staffed with a free-standing charge nurse and Health Unit Coordinator 24/7.

Ideal candidates will have a passion for teamwork, demonstrate accountability and have an appreciation for family-centered care.

Schedule:

• Full-time, Day/Night rotating shifts: Three 12-hour shifts, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. / 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., 36 hours per week.

What you will need

• All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and complete the program within five years of their start date.
• Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina.
• BLS certification required.
• Ability to document assessments, plans of care, interventions, evaluations and reevaluations of patient status.
• Ability to assess the nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients, independently seek resources and work collaboratively.
• Ability to educate patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care.
• Ability to manage professional relationships with patients, families, visitors, the healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others.
